Shatford Memorial Elementary

Emergency Closure

The Halifax Regional School Board may respond to poor or worsening weather conditions, especially in winter, by cancelling school or bus services.

What happens when school is cancelled before the day begins?  Public Service Announcements are made on all local radio stations starting at 6:00 a.m.  There are two possible closures:  all schools OR schools within a family.  Here are the distinctions:

Closure of all Schools:  if the weather and road/sidewalk conditions are severe you will hear the cancellation of "all schools within the Halifax Regional School Board."

Closure of Schools associated with a specific "Family of Schools:"  Shatford Memorial Elementary School is a member of the Sir John A Macdonald High School Family of Schools.  The key words to listen for are "closure of all schools within the Sir John A. Macdonald Family."

What about Attendance, Field Trips, and After School Activities?  If classes are cancelled or if bus service is cancelled, Shatford Memorial Elementary School field trips and after-school activities are automatically cancelled.

What will happen if school is cancelled after the day has begun?  It may be that the weather conditions deteriorate after the school day has started and that Halifax Regional School Board may announce a mid-day closure.  Public Servce Announcements are made on all local radio stations starting around 11:00 a.m.  The notice will also be posted on the front page of the HRSB web site (www.hrsb.ca).  Again, listen for how our school may be included; all schools OR the "Sir John A. Macdonald Family of schools."

Here is what will happen if Shatford Memorial Elementary School is to be closed mid-day; all families will be contacted.  We will follow the School Cancellation - Student Information Form you filled out for us.
